Spotlight: Summer Submissions and Events

We are back…and then we’re off! Due to our web host problems, we’ve been offline for the last ten days. It is now summer vacation and we will be on hiatus until September. In the meantime, here are some resources and submissions that should get you through the sunny weather and the dog days of summer!

2012 Summer Events Guide from the Oregonian’s May 18th A&E section. Get the inside scoop on this summer’s offerings of concerts, visual arts, music, theater, dance, outdoor events and more.

– “101 Things To Do Summer 2012,” from the May 17th Portland Tribune, a guide stock full of things to do in Portland and beyond.

Willamette Week’s Summer Guide, scheduled to go to press next Wednesday on June 20th.

– “Annual Events & Festivals in Portland,” from Travel Portland offers a good listing of Portland’s major summer events.

From Macey:

Summer Recovery Special for teachers only, giving them $10 treatments between June 13th and July 10th to help fix themselves up after a long school year. Tell us where you teach, and get treated for $10! Schedule online at or call 503.244.7525.

From Casey:

Here at PDX Nu Shooz HQ, we are proud to announce TWO big happenings in Nu Shooz land! First: The long-awaited full-length release from Nu Shooz, Kung Pao Kitchen is now available! Kung Pao Kitchen features nine previously un-released tracks recorded throughout 1988-1992 — more filling & less calories than a plate of egg rolls (lasts longer, too)!

More information on Kung Pao Kitchen and the Shooz can be found in the attached press release and on Stop by the homepage to listen to KPK in its entirety and browse the Press page for album artwork, photos, videos, interviews & other tasty tidbits.

Second, we invite the Portland On The Cheap readers to celebrate the release of Kung Pao Kitchen — and the 33rd anniversary of the Shooz’ very first gig in Portland — at our CD release party Thursday, June 21 at Lucky Strike on SE Hawthorne from 7-9pm. Valerie and John of Nu Shooz will be hanging out, so feel free to bring any old school Nu Shooz memorabilia that you’d like to have inscribed! We will be listening to KPK in its entirety, and a special Kung Pao Kitchen Cocktail concoction will be available for $6! See attached flyer for info, or visit:

I am with the Pacific Northwest division of the Food and Water Watch. We, along with several other not for profit organizations will be holding a rally on June 26th; here’s the basic info for the event:

Just Say ‘No’ to Nestlé Rally!
What: Rally telling Kitzhaber to stop Nestlé from bottling our water in the Gorge!
Where: Terry Schrunk Plaza (SW Portland)
When: Tuesday, June 26th at 4:00 PM
Who: Speakers including Terry Sweier – an activist from a group famous for fighting Nestlé in Michigan.

Stand in solidarity with a diverse coalition of groups and over 30,000 Oregonians who are demanding the Kitzhaber protect our water from a Nestle water bottling plant in the Gorge! Join us for activities for all ages, including music, adding your message to our huge banner and more.

From Michael:

Pioneer Courthouse Square welcomes FESTA ITALIANA, Portland’s Italian American Festival. The 21st Annual event takes place August 23-25, 11:00 AM-11:00 PM, and it’s a “molto buono” (very good) time for family and friends to experience
nonstop Italian-themed fun: Entertainment, Food, Vendors and our huge Wine Gardens in two piazza locations. FREE ADMISSION!

Children love the Carter Family Marionettes, the Pizza Toss and everyone cheers during the Grape Stomp competition. Spend a weekend in Agosto (August) in our city center piazza, well served by the TriMet transit system.
