Weekend on the Cheap: Friday, January 11th – Sunday, January 13th:

– Free: Complimentary admission to the Lan Su Chinese Garden, 10:00am – 5:00pm.
– Free: Tax Time 101 workshop, 1:00pm – 2:00pm at Northwest Library. Topics will include: an overview of taxes and the mechanics of filing your taxes, available tax credits, what documents you will need when filing, and where to do your taxes for free or low cost. No registration needed, first-come, first served.
– Free: Portlandia early screening at McMenamins Mission Theater, 7:00pm show time. Come earlier at 6:00pm for live music by NOHM. Minor okay with parent or guardian. You can also catch the regular 10:00pm screening at the Bagdad Backstage Bar as well as the Mission Theater.
– Free: Powell’s book event with author Daniel Pink and his new book “To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth about Moving Others,” 7:30pm at Powell’s Books on Burnside.
– $5 admission: Comedy Night at McMenamins Bagdad Theater, 10:30pm. 21 and over only.

– Free: Final day of complimentary admission to the Lan Su Chinese Garden, 10:00am – 5:00pm.
– Free: Winter Trails Day, 9:00am – 2:00pm at White River West Sno-Park. No registration required, sponsored by REI, please see web site for full details.
– Free: “Fresh Winter Salads: Why Bitter is the New Sweet,” informative cooking demonstration with recipes and samples. 11:00am – 12:00pm at downtown Portland’s Central Library US Bank room.
– Free (with donations to the Oregon Food Bank): Annual J.R.R. Tolkien Birthday Bash all day long at McMenamins Kennedy School. Features free movie screenings, costume contest and music, open for all ages.
– Free: Capoeira Brazilian martial arts workshop and demonstration, 12:30pm – 2:00pm. Wear loose fitting clothes, bring a water bottle and prepare yourself for a day of Brazilian fun!

– Free: William Stafford Poetry Celebration, 2:00pm – 4:00pm at the Hillsboro Main Library.
– Free: “The Winter Blues: A Guide to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD),” 3:00pm – 4:00pm at the Capitol Hill Library meeting room.
– $10 admission: Competitive Erotic Fan Fiction comedy show, 7:00pm at the Brody Theater.
– Free: OPB Music Presents PDX/Rx: Hip-hop at its finest from local tastemakers, 9:00pm show at Mississippi Studios.

– Free: Big Ass Boombox Music Festival, Friday and Saturday with 40 bands and 15 writers over four venues within walking distance of one another.
